How to Apply

How to Apply for the Zero Prize 2026

A field-by-field walkthrough of the Zero Prize application (Air / Water / Land pollution challenge). Applications close 31 August 2026. This guide was independently researched from the official Zero Prize site — always confirm details on the funder's page before applying.

Should you apply? (5-minute gate)

Apply only if all of the following are true:

  • The solution reduces Air (PM₂.₅), Water (BOD/COD/TSS/nutrients/coliform), or Land/waste pollution in India in a way a third party can measure.
  • You can name a pilot geography and a 2-4 week baseline (or a historic CPCB/ULB/NMCG dataset).
  • You can be deployed and monitored in a 12-month real-world context (form field 1.3). Lab-only ideas fail Stage 1 screening.
  • You will accept CPCB-grade monitors / NMCG-or-CPCB-accredited labs / CPCB-empanelled waste auditors.
  • You are an India-based team (startups, labs, ULBs, NGOs, youth teams, industry — per the official FAQ).

Do not apply if you only have a pitch deck, no site, no pollutant metric, or you are seeking an equity-style accelerator. This is a results prize. Scoring: verified impact 40%, feasibility 20%, economic viability/scalability 40%.

Category targets

CategoryPrizeWhat "winning" looks like
Air₹1 CrVerified 15-25% reduction in population-weighted PM₂.₅ in a defined pilot area; 2-3 month pilot; meteorology-adjusted
Water₹1 CrVerified 20-30% reduction in wastewater pollution load at source/discharge clusters; BOD, COD, TSS, nutrients (kg/day); MLD treated/reused
Land₹1 CrReduce, recycle, or prevent 15,000 tonnes of waste from landfill over 3 years; quarterly verification

If your expected reduction is "we think air will get better," stop and build a monitoring plan first.

1. Order of operations (before Google sign-in)

Work backwards from 31 August 2026. Assemble a folder named zero-prize-2026/:

11-team-cvs.pdf4-8 lines each: who runs the pilot, who owns data1.4
12-other/Photos of existing deployment, weighbridge SOPs, SHG MoUsoptional uploads

Numbers to compute before you type anything:

  • TCO (INR integer): example placeholder is 5000000 (₹50 lakh). Include hardware, install, 12-month O&M, and third-party monitoring. Under-counting monitoring is a common fail.
  • Unit cost of impact: Air → ₹ per µg/m³ reduction × population in the polygon. Water → ₹ per kg COD (or BOD) removed per day. Land → ₹ per tonne diverted.
  • Baseline duration: pick 2-4 weeks unless you already have a year of CPCB/ULB data. "Less than 2 weeks" is a red flag.

People to name: pilot owner (on-site 2-6 months); data owner (who sends files to verifiers); community counterpart (if filling optional Section 5); lab or auditor (even if MoU is "in progress" — say so in 3.7 risks).

2. Click path: sign in

  1. Open https://www.zeroprize.org/apply
  2. Click Continue with Google.
  3. Use the Google account you want as the system of record (email is locked to that account). Do not use a personal Gmail if the company-domain account is what auditors will email.
  4. Land on My Application. If you already submitted, you will see status: received / under review / shortlisted / not progressed — plus Reference ID.
  5. If editing after submit: the banner says "Editing your application — changes will be saved as a new version." Use that only if you must.

Complete sections in order 0 → 6. Required fields show a green asterisk.

3. About You

FieldRequiredWhat to enter
Full NameYesLegal name matching incorporation / ULB letter
Email AddressLockedGoogle account email
OrganisationOptionalCompany / ULB / leave blank for informal youth team — then lean on team composition
PhoneYesIndian mobile with country code, one number that picks up

4. Section 1 — Applicant Profile & Eligibility

1.1 Solution Title: 8-12 words, category-readable. Good: Ward-12 Hyperlocal PM2.5 Suppression + CPCB-grade Mesh. Bad: EcoVision AI Platform 3.0.

1.2 Category: Air / Water / Land (one primary). Pick the pollutant you can measure, not the SDG you like. A dual air+waste product still picks one track.

1.3 Implementation Readiness: Options: Ready for Implementation / Deployed / Operationalised. Pick Operationalised only if running now with data; Deployed if hardware is on site; Ready for Implementation if site + permissions are real and you can switch on within the Sep-Dec 2026 window. If you cannot honestly pick one, you are too early.

1.4 Team Composition: 150-250 words. Named roles: (1) technical lead, (2) site ops, (3) M&E/data, (4) ULB or plant counterpart. One sentence each on a prior deployment.

Uploads: incorporationCertUrl (company cert / ULB order / society registration); websiteUrl (a page that shows the product, not a Linktree).

5. Section 2 — Technical Description & Innovation

2.1 Mechanism of Action: Cause → pathway → measurable output. Air: what mass of PM₂.₅ removed or avoided, at what flow/coverage, vs meteorology. Water: kg/day BOD/COD/N/P; hydraulic residence time; sludge fate. Land: tonnes in → tonnes recycled/refused; contamination controls. Avoid "AI-powered sustainability." If software-only, explain the physical reduction.

2.2 Novelty & Advancement: One paragraph: what failed before in Indian cities, what you changed, evidence (not adjectives). "First in India" without data scores poorly.

2.3 Category-specific (only the one matching 1.2 appears):

  • Air — Monitors & Calibration: Make/model, CPCB-grade or equivalent, colocated reference, cal frequency, meteorology (T, RH, wind, BLH). If only low-cost sensors, say how you will transfer to reference grade during the pilot.
  • Water — Target Pollutants & Expected Reduction: Pollutant, units, % and kg/day, influent range. 90% with no influent concentration is not believable.
  • Land — Waste Type & Digital Traceability: Waste stream, tonnes/month baseline, GPS/QR/barcode custody chain. No Excel-only "we estimated 15,000 tonnes."

6. Section 3 — Impact Verification Strategy

This is the heart of the application. Write it as if CPCB will read it.

3.1 Baseline Plan (required): 2-4 week pre-intervention monitoring or historic datasets. Dates, instruments, who samples, QA/QC.

3.2 Baseline Data Source (multi-select): Prefer historic plus your own 2-4 weeks. "Baseline data to be collected during pilot" is weakest — confounds intervention with baseline. Only use it with hard justification.

3.2 Duration of Baseline Monitoring: Pick 2-4 weeks as default. "Not yet determined" invites Stage 1 kill.

3.3 Control Strategy: Air/Land → nearby control site, same meteorology/waste catchment, no intervention (they mention difference-in-difference). Water → upstream-downstream sampling with lag time, composite vs grab, accredited lab chain-of-custody.

3.4 Accreditation Compliance: Checkbox — CPCB-grade (Air) / NMCG or CPCB-accredited labs (Water) / CPCB-empanelled waste auditors (Land). Do not tick if you cannot name a vendor. A false tick is worse than a risk in 3.7.

3.5 Deployment Status: Most conservative true option. "Site to be finalised" needs a named shortlist and a permission path that fits the official timeline. Upload deploymentMapUrl (polygon of treatment, receptor population, outfall, facility gate).

3.7 Key Risks & Mitigation: Top 5: permission delay, monsoon/meteorology, instrument drift, community vandalism, verifier access. Each: likelihood, mitigation, residual. Do not write "no risks."

7. Section 4 — Feasibility & Economic Viability

4.1 Total Cost of Ownership: INR integer (placeholder 5000000) + unit explanation. Capex + 12-month opex + verification. This field is cost of the solution, not the ₹1 Cr prize.

4.2 Unit Cost of Impact: Same units as Section 2. If TCO / expected reduction is wildly cheap vs Indian benchmarks, show the spreadsheet logic.

4.3 Regulatory Compliance: Consent status (CTE/CTO), hazardous waste, electrical, worker safety. "Will comply" without a named rule is empty.

4.4 Scalability: 3 replication sites and what breaks (water chemistry, waste mix, winter inversion).

Policy alignment: NCAP, Namami Gange / NMCG, Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, PWM Rules 2022 — pick the one matching category.

4.5 Data Sharing: Yes, willing to share anonymised impact data if selected. Winners must share verified datasets. If you cannot share, you are misaligned with the prize.

Upload: businessPlanUrl (mini-business plan: TCO, GTM, target customer, monetisation, revenues, team).

8. Section 5 — Community & Secondary Impacts (optional)

Skip if truly N/A. Completing it helps if you have SHGs, informal workers, or ULB behaviour change. Fields: community engagement, roles, adoption support, social/livelihood co-benefits, institutional change, equity & inclusion, replicable models. Photos of community training beat a paragraph of SDG logos.

9. Section 6 — Awards, Funding & Declaration

6.1 Prior Funding & Recognition: Yes/No. 6.2 Details: programme name + amount. Be complete (BIRAC, SISFS, CSR). Hiding a prior grant looks worse in diligence than disclosing it.

Then Application Summary: read every answer, go back via tabs, submit. Write down the Reference ID.

10. After submit — official calendar

WhenWhat happens
By 31 Aug 2026Final application
Sep-Oct 2026Baseline establishment & pilot approvals for shortlisted teams
Nov-Dec 2026Pilot, monitoring, data submission
Jan-Feb 2027Evaluation & finalists
Mar 2027Pitch day & awards

Shortlist means you must run a monitored pilot. Budget time and cash for verification, not just hardware.

11. Common mistakes (from their scoring, not folklore)

  1. Concept-stage with no site, no pollutant number, no verifier path.
  2. Wrong category (climate-adaptation story with no Air/Water/Land metric).
  3. Low-cost sensors only, no CPCB-grade plan.
  4. No control site (Air/Land) or no up/downstream (Water).
  5. Baseline "during pilot."
  6. TCO missing monitoring costs.
  7. Unit cost in unexplained ₹.
  8. 15,000-tonne land claim without weighbridge + traceability.
  9. Ticking accreditation without a named lab/auditor.
  10. Applying as an equity-seeking accelerator — this is a prize with a public dashboard.
  11. Using a throwaway Google account and losing the Reference ID.
  12. Waiting until 31 Aug — uploads + maps fail under last-day congestion.
