How to actually use the Startup India portal (and survive it)

The Startup India portal works — eventually. The problem is it doesn't tell you how, and the official help is often silent. This is the workaround guide founders actually need: the real steps, the known bugs, and what to do when it breaks.

Written from the complaints founders actually post, not the brochure.

1

Register (the part that works)

Incorporate first — you can't register a startup that doesn't exist.
  • Incorporate first: Pvt Ltd, LLP, or registered partnership. You need the Certificate of Incorporation and entity PAN before anything.
  • Register on the portal: startupindia.gov.in → Register → it redirects to the Bhaskar portal → complete the form (name, email, nationality) → get your Bhaskar ID.
  • Log in and complete your profile: fill entity + founder details, set a password, verify via OTP.
  • Keep your profile complete: a partial profile blocks the recognition form — this is a common silent failure.
2

Get DPIIT recognition

The application, done right the first time.
  • From the dashboard, open "Get Recognised" — the application runs on the National Single Window System (NSWS).
  • Have ready: Certificate of Incorporation, entity PAN, director/partner details, a clear write-up of the problem, solution, innovation and scalability, and ideally a pitch deck / website / product video.
  • Write the innovation description carefully — vague descriptions and "ordinary trading/service" businesses are the top rejection reasons.
  • Self-certify eligibility and submit. It's free and online.
  • Track on your dashboard — status updates live there, not by email.

Rejection reality: applications are most often rejected for vague innovation descriptions, non-differentiated business models, ineligible entity types, or inconsistent information. Fix those before you submit, not after.

Known bugs and the workarounds

The portal has real, documented failure modes. Here's what founders actually do.
ProblemWhat founders reportThe workaround
SSO doesn't carry across portals Startup India / DPIIT credentials don't work on MAARG, seed-fund, or scheme portals Register separately on each portal you need. Annoying, but it's the reality — don't waste time trying to unify them.
MCA auto-fetch broken The "update company details from MCA" button has been broken for months Use the manual profile-update form instead. If the mobile-OTP field is disabled, fix the profile via the alternate path or contact support (below).
Profile shows "not DPIIT recognised" after approval Recognition granted but Bhaskar profile not updated, blocking the seed-fund page Contact the tech support number (below) — a password reset / profile refresh usually fixes it. It's a known sync bug, not your error.
Password reset loop "Profile doesn't exist" when resetting, but "CIN already linked" when creating Don't create a new account. Use the existing one; contact support to reset. Creating a duplicate makes it worse.
Grievance portal DNS error Complaint resolution system throws DNS probe errors Use the direct email + phone escalation below instead of the web form.

Escalation that actually works

The official help is often silent. These are the paths founders report working.
  • Startup India toll-free: 1800 115 565 (may not always connect — have the email ready).
  • Startup email: [email protected]
  • Investor-side: [email protected] / 1800 226 753
  • Grievance form: investorconnect.startupindia.gov.in/grievance/ (promises response in 3 working days — use it for formal complaints).
  • Tech-support direct line: founders report reaching a real tech rep at +91 80921 03446 for portal bugs (password resets, sync issues).

Honest note: these numbers and emails are what founders report working in 2026. Government contact details change — if one fails, try the next. Don't loop on a dead one.

FAQs

How long does DPIIT recognition take?

Usually a few days to a few weeks after submission, depending on review. Track status on your dashboard — not by email.

Do I need a Digital Signature Certificate?

For the recognition application itself, mostly no. Some scheme applications and DSC-signing steps do require one — get it from a provider like Pantasign when a step asks for it.

Recognition got approved but the portal still says no. What now?

It's a known sync bug. Contact the tech-support line (above) — a password reset / profile refresh usually resolves it. Not your error.

Does recognition guarantee funding?

No. Roughly 18% of recognised startups get government funding. Recognition unlocks access; the grants are separate competitive applications.
